Improved Beebo / Hector 407 Installer

If you already have installed 407 previously and it’s running, ignore this.

The key issue it fixes is with file system degradation over time. Due to some quantum space magic called read disturb, a read only file system will change after you’ve read it enough times. This happens after 4-7 years with Beebo, so this suddenly became a major (and amazingly hard to fix) issue. This fix swaps to a filesystem that can cope with this and automatically heals itself. It also updates basically all the code, fixing many minor and major bugs and fundamentally changing the underlying architecture of Beebo / Hector. The install process is very different, as it needs to fully format and reflash the storage while the pedal while it is running. If this sounds a bit like juggling chainsaws, it is.

Please follow these instructions. Do not give people links to the files without linking these instructions, do not attempt without reading all these instructions. A full list of changes and all source code is here: https://github.com/polyeffects/digit_ui/commits/master/

This is a 6.3 gb download and will take at least half an hour to install. Things will look scary during the install but don’t panic.

Please watch this video which runs through the process: https://youtu.be/jvTa-R5Wfd4

You must be running version 338 to install this update.

To install, download this file, then unzip the download file. You'll need to unzip it on your computer then copy the files over to the the flash drive, otherwise the flash drive will complain about the file being too large. Then start up the pedal with the flash drive inserted. If your unit is running a vaguely recent firmware, it should automatically start installing the update after a few minutes. You’ll see the screen displaying some text telling you not to panic. It'll tell you to restart the pedal (without removing the USB). You will see numbers start counting up, 1 to 100. At this point, wander off and come back in half an hour or so. When you return, if the numbers are still going up, keep waiting. If you wait for 10 more minutes and the number doesn't change, go to section called manual reflash.

If the screen is blank when you return, the update has mostly finished and the pedal has shutdown. At this point, you need to keep the USB inserted and restart the pedal. This will finish the installation when it starts up. You should then see some flickering (screen may look weird during this for a minute or two) while it installs the panel file. It'll then restart and you should have a fully functioning unit. If your preset has any IR based modules (cabs / reverbs) please remove them and add them again. These have been split into long and short modules. The ones called short are the same length as earlier version and the others now support much longer IRs than before.

Manual Reflash (panic)

This update is fixing a filesystem corruption issue. If the corruption has spread too far, then the update may fail. If so, you will need to open up the unit and remove the CPU module and update following this video: https://youtu.be/sucEeTSCJ_8

Gently remove the top of the enclosure after removing the 4 screws. Do not remove the screen.

Unclip the CPU module and remove the microsd card. Be careful of the gold FPC cable on the side with foot switch A. Using Balana Etcher or similar flashing program, flash the microsd card with the image here:

and then reinsert the microsd card, with the writing facing out. The CPU module can then be reinserted, side with the microsd card facing down. Do not remove the screen. Follow the video instructions.

When you restart, depending on the panel you may need to install a different panel driver. You can download the files for that here

If you need a different panel driver, you may see nothing (or just a very minimal flicker) when the unit turns on. If you wait for 5 minutes and nothing has appeared then you need to try a different panel driver. There are 3 versions. So if the first one doesn't work, just try the other 2. To select between the 3 different panels you need to edit the panel_version file using either notepad on Windows, vim/nano on Linux or TextEdit on Macintosh. 80 is installed when you flash. You can change it to either 23 or 19. So edit that file and change the number to the one you need. 19 is for early units, most likely printed as Digit from 2018-2020. You start the pedal with the USB in with these files. The video will help. https://youtu.be/sucEeTSCJ_8
